Professor Zhu Ziqiang won the 2021 IEEE Nikola Tesla Award

Chinese Research&Development Talent

IEEE is the world’s largest technical professional organization dedicated to advancing technology for the benefit of humanity. This Nikolas Tesla award is selected once a year globally, only for individuals or teams of up to three people, and the winners of the next year are announced.

Professor Zhu Ziqiang, founding director and founding director of GMCC&Welling Shanghai R&D Center, commends him for his outstanding contributions to the design, modeling, control, and application of permanent magnet AC motors and their drives. In fact, this is already the second IEEE honor that Professor Zhu won. Professor Zhu won the IEEE Industrial Application Outstanding Achievement Award in 2019.

It is reported that the IEEE Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers is the world’s largest professional and technical organization. It has more than 400,000 members in more than 160 countries around the world, and holds more than 1,300 professional and technical conferences annually in the world.

As the winner of the 46th IEEE Nikola Tesla Award, professors uphold the spirit of “seeking innovation” and have been committed to the design, control and application of permanent magnet motors. He has excellent research results in the fields of motors, power electronics and control.

He has more than 50 authorized invention patents and published nearly 1200 academic papers, including 444 IEEE and IET journal papers. The papers are widely cited by international peers and textbooks.

At present, professors lead the world’s largest and internationally leading R&D team of motors and drives at the University of Sheffield in the field of permanent magnet motor systems. They have created and supervised many scientific research centers. The more representative ones are: GMCC&Welling Shanghai Motor R&D Center, Midea Central Research Institute Motor and Drive Control Research Center, Sheffield Midea Joint Laboratory, Sheffield China CRRC Electric Drive Technology Research Center, Sheffield Siemens Wind Power R&D Center. It is worth mentioning that Professor Zhu also served as the chief scientist of the UK’s largest offshore wind power boom cooperation plan funded by the British governme

Since 2010, professors have led the GMCC&Welling Shanghai Motor and Drive R&D Center to study the core technology of the motor and the industry’s forward-looking technology, and basically output more than one hundred patent results every year.

GMCC is a precision manufacturer specializing in the R&D, manufacture and marketing of rotary air-conditioner compressors, with its products applied widely to air conditioners, refrigerators, refrigerated cabinets, heat-pump water-heaters, dehumidifiers, driers, refrigerated trucks, and so on.
